State Sen. Kimberly Lightford’s husband exchanged gunfire with at least one suspect during carjacking earlier this week, police say – Chicago Tribune*

At some point after Sen. Keimberly Lightford and her husband, Eric McKennie, were ordered out of their black Mercedes SUV, there was an exchange of gunfire between McKennie and at least one of the carjackers, Broadview police Chief Thomas Mills said Thursday. If he fired at fleeing, carjackers, he committed a crime. Doubtful, though, that we will see the full details ever.

As crazy as it sounds, Chicago has been surprisingly tolerant of legal and valid CCL holders defending themselves against criminal acts. There are stories seemingly every week of a CCL holder defending himself against a criminal, and shooting him dead, and no charges are filed. Everyone complains about Kim Foxx and she sucks, for sure, but the first step in the criminal justice process are the police. Most of the time, the police chose to arrest and bring charges or not. And the police are aware of the violent streets in Cook County and the risk to ordinary citizens who… Read more »

Good to learn that smart progressives know they need to carry and have carry permits. Lightford’s hubby is no fool. If the jackers believe that their victims may shoot back, the jacking crime wave may ebb. Until then, jackers have little to fear. They have been unlikely to be arrested and if arrested unlikely to be prosecuted. Very low risk high return crime. No wonder we are getting more and more of it.

This is truly a remarkable story. But does anyone really expect a progressive to ‘see the light’, admit they were wrong, and change course? Extremely unlikely, but we can wish.

Good for him, if he had landed a shot and killed the guy… do you think he would’ve gotten the Rittenhouse treatment, or woul they see it as self defense from the get go?

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
