Strikes loom on three Illinois college campuses – NPR Illinois

The cloud of uncertainty threatens to disrupt classrooms with just a few weeks to go in the spring semester. The unions have been without contracts since last summer.

Just close the schools and have the students go elsewhere.

Hmm, that’s not as outlandish as one may think, because: 1) many credits are readily transferable, and 2) college isn’t like public grammar, middle school, or high school, where, in the case of the latter, you’re tied into staying in the school district where you reside.

All three schools are in a struggle for students. I note that with respect to Governors State, a small school of 1800 students with scant infrastructure, there was mention of one advisor to every 500 students. What surprised me was not that the union was complaining about the lack of advisors, but rather that the school has a 53 percent drop-out rate after the first year and that Niche states a 24% graduation rate (it must refer to a four year time span as the six year grad rate appears considerably higher).
