Taxpayers paying $50 million+ for Chicago-owned bus station – Center Square

Alderman Marty Quinn opposed the measure and said it’s a bad deal for the city. “Our budget gap that we’re going to get into in short order would suggest that we shouldn’t be in the business of buying property. We should be in the business of selling property,” Quinn said.

Mayor Cliff Notes’ successor will get a dilapidated bus station and gobs of government employees to operate it.

This one is a hard no.

An important question not addressed in the article: What will happen if the City doesn’t buy the facility? Will the carriers buy their own terminal(s)? Will buses just load on the street? Will service to Chicago be dropped in favor of stations in a few suburbs? Or no service at all?
In any case, when we look at how much money is wasted on overbuilt CTA facilities (Damen Green Line, Red Line extension, etc) this is relatively a tiny expenditure.
