Ted Dabrowski: Illinois Republicans want their party to make arguments, not excuses – Chicago Tribune*

"The point of the Republican Party is to conserve the amazing assets Illinois has developed — e.g., its infrastructure, industry, universities, arts, et al. — while developing new ones. Both require systemic change in Illinois."

Winning requires winning language and a good attitude. Commenters that relentlessly post defeatist language and doubt should be approached with serious skepticism. Don’t forget Johnson has a 6% approval rating and Pritzker has no national appeal.

The RNC needs to invest in IL, and not concede control to the far left Democrats. The time should be now. Invest in quality Canadians give campaign support. RNC should do a voter registration push. It’s time.

I sometimes feel that, aside from the occasional outburst from a Republican disgusted with Pritzgers policies and an attempt to do something about it, there are some in office that have carved out a nice little niche for themselves so long as they don’t rock the boat.

I guess I’m jusr part of the problem, Illinois is just been F… by the democrat control for all my life and there is no way out until like an addict they hit rock bottom and with a state I don’t know the way out of that. A Republican Governor can do basically nothing with supermajorities in the house and senate, the districting and probably worst is the public unions that are going to hang on to this insane pay and pensions and go down with the ship and why not…

If you are a public official, I guess you could relentlessly hammer away at whatever inequalities you encounter whilst enlisting as many fellow politicians to do so with great, loud support from your constituents. Pritzger shrugged off talks of downstate IL merging with IN, until said talk became too loud and frequent to ignore. If you can’t enlist the public to clearly articulate the need for a change, again loudly, then perhaps they aren’t all that interested or just don’t want it.

You make good points. I asked before on this site what Dabrowski could do as governor to avoid being stonewalled by the Dems as Rauner did. I didn’t receive a good answer.

Rauner seemed to start well but capitulated to the Dems. it is hard to find anyone in this state that won’t. Seems elected officials have too much money to lose when they speak out.

Here’s my two cents about how any Republican governor can still make a big difference: Don’t underestimate how much impact the right appointments to department heads and boards can make, which governors have a big hand in. Bad asses are needed. Rauner didn’t do that. In fact, some boards he never even touched. Veto all the crazy stuff that comes out of the legislature, but with strong, persuasive reasons pounded in about the basis for the veto. Again, Rauner did not do that. In fact, he was on the wrong side of much of it, especially later in his term… Read more »

The pension mess was partially caused by Jim Edgar.
Illinois Governor Jim Edgar was a Republican.
Politicians are politicians, never forget that.

Republican Governor Jim Edgar allowed state employees to purchase additional pension service years through the Early Retirement Incentive program.
This added billions to unfunded pension liabilities over time because thousands of workers used it. Republicans are no better (or worse) than Democrats, same wine different bottle.
