I wonder why the Director of the U of C crime lab did not note the most obvious fact illustrated by her charts – black homicide victim rate is 20 times the white rate. 20 times. How does she talk about harm caused to blacks by the criminal justice system?

The only conclusion here is that blacks are killing each other at unbelievable rates, and the only way to stop it is to incarcerate more black perpetrators. Unless she believes that whites are sneaking into these neighborhoods undetected in order to kill blacks.

Many police chiefs have lamented that social media beefs are a significant driver of inner-city homicides. It’s not so much the gang activity itself that is the cause – like dealers shooting each other over lucrative corners (although that does happen), it’s Rapper “A” disses Rapper “B”‘s crew, or insults some homie/relative/associate of gang banger “C”, that causes an endless loop of retaliation. That illegal immigrant mexican girl that was killed while holding her mom’s hand in Little Village IIRC was an innocent bystander shot beause she happened to be in the way of two gangbangers driving around looking for… Read more »

Maybe they will learn that shooting is not an acceptable response to an insult if actual consequences are meted out.

There is no redemption story for the small segment of society willing to shoot at each other, and kill innocent bystanders, over a social media beef. They need to be locked up and throw away the key. I read a study once in college, can’t remember what it is called, but something along the lines that poor cultures with low institutional involvement often devolve into inter-personal violence over petty ‘respect’ issues. No one in my community would shoot at somebody else over Facebook disses. The local facebook group are basically progressives screaming at conservatives over stupid local issues. It’s never… Read more »

It’s a broken culture, and will stay broken until they take the first step and stop shooting. Nothing else will help until the killing stops.

Back in the old days when I worked gangs, social media was the “tagging” (graffiti), so there was no instant “dis”…

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
