Why Amendment 1 is too close to call – Illinois Policy

Voters can change the Illinois Constitution in one of two ways: 60% of votes on the change, or a majority of total election votes. The Amendment 1 vote is so close and so many ballots remain uncounted, that calculating those two numbers remains elusive.

Why do ballots remain uncounted for Amendment 1, yet a few minutes after poling locations closed Pritzger declared victory? Hmmm, yes we know why.

They use exit polling not actually counting ballots when calling it for Pritzker at 7:02 PM. Fox News called it for Newsom right at poll closing time without one ballot counted. This has been done for years. Also, for Amendment 1 to officially pass it will need more than 50% yes votes compared to total ballots. We don’t know this total ballot number until 2 weeks post election because mail ballots are accepted up to 2 weeks after polls close if postmarked before deadline.
