Illinois lawmaker hopes to ban false statements in political advertising – WIFR (Rockford)
Under a plan from Rep. Denyse Wang Stoneback, people could be charged with a Class A misdemeanor for knowingly and recklessly making, publishing, broadcasting, or circulating false or misleading statements about candidates or elected officials. Anyone violating the change could also be sued civilly.
Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth says the Respect for Marriage Act is “a great first step” in further protecting same-sex marriage, and that she would support lifting the filibuster on a case-by-case basis for major pieces of legislation such as the Voting Rights Act and an assault weapons ban.
The SAFE-T Act crashes head-on into the state constitution and is based on disproven claims of pretrial defendants widely languishing in jail for want of cash bail. It is an affront to public safety, the legislative process and our communities.
