Chicago’s playpen, an enclave where boaters party on Lake Michigan near Ohio Street Beach, is closed for the summer. While the city’s lakefront and beaches will reopen this summers, “hopefully later in June,” congregating between boats won’t be allowed, Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Friday.

It’s a federal anchorage. The only person that can close it, is the Captain of the Port (USCG office in Milwaukee). As of today, there is no mention in the local notice to mariners.

Buckwheat’s closing of the playpen is a gross over-reach. With everything else, she seems content to watch the numbers and adjust on a weekly or monthly basis. Here she assumes without any evidence that things are going to be hazardous for the entire boating season. Why the difference? Maybe all the Chicago boaters should move to Indiana, Wisconsin or Michigan. Who needs a slap in face like this?
Buckwheat will have NO authority over the playpen if it is designated as a State or Federal Waterway.
So, 56% of Illinois’ CV deaths come from the black communities, with another large percentage from the Latino communities.
Buckwheat’s solution? Punish all areas, especially those where infection is minimal. Because everyone has to suffer to the same extent, regardless of compliance with social distancing.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: She’s spending/sacrificing everyone else’s ‘privilege’ because the coronavirus disproportionately affects minority communities. When she says ‘we’re all in this together’ she really means that – she is sacrificing everyone else’s jobs, livelihood, business, home and savings to remedy the disproportionate affects of coronavirus. The mayor ought to stick her nose in one of the books, articles or lectures from Chicago’s own Shelby Steele. She could learn a lot from him. Look him up people, he’s got a broader & much more thoughtful outlook on race relations in this country than the race baiters who do get coverage. Wow. I used to spend some time out there when I was younger. It was a lot of fun, and it’s no different than a block party, but on the water. Many boats stay separate and keep their distance, but just like the camaraderie of being in the same area. Music plays, and yes, there is one or two big parties a summer. It’s no different than many other regions with water, and far more tame. The reason the boaters congregate there is because the breaker walls keep the water on the “inside,” calm.
