If you haven’t read it, you’ve missed what every journalist in America has probably read: a brutal column on how National Public Radio (NPR) lost America’s trust, written last week by a 25-year NPR veteran, Uri Berliner.
It may be shaping up as a game-changer, but not because it exposed anything new. It didn’t, but this time, most every national news outlet in America reported on Berliner’s column and, more surprisingly, didn’t deny much of it.
Berliner’s column seems to be cranking the spotlight on mainstream media up to full blast. NPR may be among the very worst, but much of what Berliner wrote applies to much of the traditional news media. Hopefully, all media will get the message – in Illinois, too.
NPR, as Berliner describes, is hostile to viewpoint diversity, staffed entirely by leftists and woke to the point of silliness. NPR, he says, embraced a knee-jerk, activist, scolding posture, representing the “distilled worldview of a very small segment of the U.S. population.”
Most importantly, Berliner describes how NPR willfully distorted the news. It peddled the Russia collusion hoax, rejected any coverage of the Hunter Biden laptop and its evidence of Biden family corruption, and censored criticism of establishment views on Covid.
That’s what most Americans already know, which is part of Berliner’s point. NPR’s audience has consequently shrunk to a niche on the far left, he explained. For NPR, Berliner says, that’s “devastating both for its journalism and its business model.” [Emphasis added.]
People are consuming less news, worsening the financial plight of traditional news media, though the downturn has hit most newer, online sights as well.
Why? Is NPR unique? Haven’t many other outlets likewise shunned moderates and conservatives?
Of course they have. Take one topic Berliner wrote about as an example – suppression of news of the Hunter Biden laptop. That suppression by NPR and many other outlets in the months prior to the 2020 election is monumentally important because it likely tipped the 2020 election, since Donald Trump lost by a microscopic margin – less than 40,000 votes spread among three or four states. Worse, that suppression was accomplished with the help of dozens of former and current U.S. intelligence officials, as Berliner wrote and many others have documented.
NPR was not alone in suppressing that story. You’ll find virtually nothing, for example, in the national news pages of the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times about Biden corruption or the laptop. For that matter, you’ll never find much of anything on those pages embarrassing to the Biden Administration. The Atlantic was another offender. Anne Applebaum, its most prominent writer, smugly said they ignored the laptop story because they didn’t find it “relevant” or “interesting.”
Then we have WBEZ in Chicago and other local NPR affiliates. Aside from their own bias to the left, they should be held directly accountable for what they broadcast, especially their primary content that comes from NPR.
Where is their condemnation of NPR or demands that it reform, from those affiliates or other journalists?
Nothing so far, with one exception. That’s a Chicago Tribune editorial praising Berliner. (The Tribune’s editorial side is far more balanced than its news side.)
Since Berliner’s article, NPR’s embarrassed itself further. It suspended Berliner – some answer to the charge that viewpoint diversity isn’t tolerated. Berliner responded by resigning. And NPR’s President and CEO, Katherine Maher, wrote a response to Berliner’s column that substituted whining for rebuttal. It was chiefly “how profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning” Berliner’s column was.
And NPR President Maher is now being outed as almost comically woke and censorious in many stories listing her previous comments, nicely summarized here by City Journal.
Questions must also be directed at the foundations that showered money on WBEZ — $61 million, which was put in less than two years ago to the nonprofit company that took ownership of WBEZ and the Sun-Times. The bias was entirely evident long before then. NPR had long ago openly admitted, for example, to its suppression of the Biden laptop story. Did that not concern those foundations? Are they demanding reforms now?

Something is happening, and it’s good news. It’s subtle, but big.
It was described in another recent column that got quite a bit of attention, before the NPR scandal broke, by an author I am not familiar with named Santiago Pliego. It was titled “The Vibe Shift”, which Pliego described as follows:
The Vibe Shift I’m talking about is the speaking of previously unspeakable truths, the noticing of previously suppressed facts. I’m talking about the give you feel when the walls of Propaganda and Bureaucracy start to move as you push; the very visible dust kicked up in the air as Experts and Fact Checkers scramble to hold on to decaying institutions; the cautious but electric rush of energy when dictatorial edifices designed to stifle innovation, enterprise, and thought are exposed or toppled.
Let the NPR debacle accelerate the Vibe Shift. Hurray for the Vibe Shift.

Elon Musk Calls NPR CEO ‘One of the Worst Human Beings in America’

Fact check: True.
So many insights and confirmations of what everyone already suspects about NPR in Berliner piece. Despite such a gigantic % of NPR stories devoted to racial equity, Black & Latino folks make up just a tiny % of NPRs shrinking audience? ….are things any different at shrinking audience ST/WBEZ?? “Despite all the resources we’d devoted to building up our news audience among blacks and Hispanics, the numbers have barely budged. In 2023, according to our demographic research, 6 percent of our news audience was black, far short of the overall U.S. adult population, which is 14.4 percent black. And Hispanics… Read more »
of course, for us Chicagoans, we’d all love to know if at ST/WBEZ & WTTW ,as they lay off staff, do they have the same issues as NPR? do they have DEI staff coordinator/consultant? a zillion employee resource “affinity” groups for every identity group under the sun? only a tiny fraction of Black & Latino readers/viewers?….I’m sure it’s the same deal
NPR is a government shill yes, in the same vein so is Voice of America 9.8 MHz. Recorded, scripted, reviewed and approved propaganda.
The FISA reauthorization with enhanced warrantless spying on citizens will help to quash the ‘Vibe Shift’ for this regime. Folks need to realize that the Leftists Democrats, Pritzker included, have embraced authoritarianism to keep power. The legacy media is just the propaganda arm of that authoritarian regime. America is a full blown banana republic now with rigged elections, corrupted AG, DA’s and judges who brazenly ignore Constitutional law and legal precedent to go after this regimes political opponents and those individuals who would call it out. The regimes fiat currency is being devalued so fast with multi-trillion annual deficit spending… Read more »
Additionally imposing “sanctions” as standard operating procedure against countries that sway from our rules, is eroding the worlds trust in the dollar. A sanction is outright theft, no different than if the government decided to empty your bank account one night. We are already seeing countries moving off the dollar, Saudi is for the first time accepting Ruble and Yuan. The only reason we can run up trillion dollar debts is because everyone trusts our currency, worldwide. In the next decade that will end and it will be devastating for us economically.
Trump, and pretty much any Republican, needs to have about a four or five point lead IMO to overcome the process and media rigged against them. But who knows what the deep state will pull just before this election? It could be worse.
When Democrats win it’s because of cheating and the “deep state”? Maybe you just need to double up on your tin foil hat.
Then again, maybe Republicans need to start improving their mail in voting results?
Are you suggesting that Republicans cheat to win?
No. Getting out more of your base using mail in ballots is perfectly legal. Is that why Republicans need a five point lead going into an election? They don’t understand the laws around elections? They deserve to lose if that’s the case.
Get off it. Read what was said and respond honestly. It was not about legit GOTV efforts. And BTW, some GOTV should be called cheating, such as Google sending its GOTV reminders only to known Dems.
I did. You implied cheating and then on this post you called it cheating. Time to be honest with yourself Mark.
Should Republicans be the first to harvest the nursing homes for mail in ballots before the Democrats arrive?
sending ballots to address that are not residential isn’t.
PPF, what is your view about the government strong arming social media to suppress news they don’t like, such as on the Biden laptop, Covid and Russiagate? You’re cool with that? And I didn’t attribute all the rest to cheating. Words matter. I said “media rigged against them. Nobody can seriously claim those things didn’t swing . And I have written many times before that Dems do a superior job on legal things like turnout. 20K votes (to get to the total gap of 40,000 in those states where Biden won by a hair. Tin hat my ass
“PPF, what is your view about the government strong arming social media to suppress news they don’t like, such as on the Biden laptop, Covid and Russiagate? You’re cool with that?” I never said that Mark. Words matter. For the record, I don’t like the government squashing free speech through implied threats. I also don’t like government officials that tell election officials to find the votes. All of it reeks of corruption. Now to your original comment. What did you mean by the “process”? Certainly seems like you were alluding to cheating in that comment. Why would Republicans need a… Read more »
This is the new Rufo piece/interview, exactly what your discussing.
Wikipedia co-founder ‘shocked’ by NPR chief Katherine Maher (https://www.city-journal.org/article/wikipedia-co-founder-shocked-by-npr-chief-katherine-maher)
Quite a few years ago Ron Paul MD, won a GOP state primary and the NPR announced only the second place winner that morning!
The extreme leftist progressives have declared war on traditional US values. Sadly it’s working, as we see things happening every day that would have been unthinkable a decade ago. The insistence that you can pick your gender, or species for that matter, is absolutely insane, and the media is spreading this garbage daily. I saw an article this week where Downers Grove has gone full blown leftist, as both the Village Council and Library Board are working to eliminate any clear thinking people. These are the same geniuses that tried to have a Drag Queen Bingo Night targeting children at… Read more »
If you look at the NYT’s extremely detailed map of the 2020 election, you’ll see that Downers Grove is full blown D+30 or more. It’s long gone, it cannot be saved. The library board and village council reflect the values of the far left community that Downer’s Grove is. I used to get upset at this kind of stuff, it’s so common all over the suburbs, but this is merely a reflection of the community already. It’s sad, and just another reason to leave Illinois.
His words apply to all media with the exception of independent youtubers, substack, Rumble, Telegram,, Tucker, Elons Twitter, etc. Even Fox News is propaganda shilling for Ukraine and Israel with the same tired deep state talking points. My wife and I watch nothing on TV anymore except movies. We get all news from independent and first hand sources on the Internet. My youtube subscription list is up to 200 or so sources that I fully trust and daily expose the mainstream propaganda. People really need to drop their cable TV accounts, drop Facebook and other social media and seek out… Read more »
It is sad. I used to listen to and support NPR 7 or so years ago. But their programming changed and you could really see it, their spin and their push to move you in their liberal direction. Most of which didn’t make any sense. Back then I could just turn it off and listen to the programming that was more normal, but now, their entire program line up is a waste of time. Today, with this nut-job running the place, I don’t want any of my tax dollars going there. I listened to her interview last night and I… Read more »
With the suspension of Uri Berliner, NPR and PBS have made their own noose. When Trump is elected both will lose their federal funding. Good riddance. I’ll increase my contribution to support local WFMT for it’s classical music and minimal woke preaching (although they do DEI preach a bit) but WBEZ and WTTW won’t survive. Like socialists everywhere, the woke want to take other people’s tax dollars to pay for their pleasures but won’t step up themselves to pay. Too bad that Harpie Cokie Roberts is dead and won’t live to see the monster and it’s inevitable demise that she… Read more »
Christopher Rufo’s hourly drip-drip of Kathleen Maher tweets (the current CEO of NPR) is amazing. She’s a complete nutjob.
She’s indistinguishable from a satirical character named Titania McGrath — a comical stereotype of the woke extreme. Every NPR affiliate, NPR supporter and those foundations that funded WBEZ/Sun-Times should be demanding Maher’s immediate termination.
Spot on about Kathleen Maher being a real life Titania McGrath. Titania McGrath is a hilarious human Babylon Bee and like a homing missile into the silly lockstep woke tropes.
People have remarked that Maher comes across as AI-generated. It wouldn’t surprise me if she was.
Today’s drip is that she contributed money to Stacy Abrams election denier fund. Democrats can deny election results, Republicans can’t
Chicago Tribune? More like the Associated Times Press. With the exception of a few local articles everything in that rag has an AP or NYT byline.
Yes, that’s another element of the bias on their news side. A.P. and NYT are also among the most biased, and the Tribune picks from just those to support that left’s narrative of the day.
Chicago Media does add some local color now and then blaming ‘Indiana Gun Dealers’ for Chicago people shooting each other. Same trope they have peddling for 30 years or so now.
