Chicago closed 50 public schools 10 years ago – but the city hasn’t keep its promises – Chicago Sun-Times

Today, big cities nationwide again face similar dynamics as those that led to school closings across the country: major student population declines, aging buildings in need of repair and budget deficits. Here, as a $628 million deficit approaches and enrollment losses have accelerated, even insiders who oppose closings say balancing the budget would be more difficult if those 50 schools were still open. CPS has 81,000 fewer students compared to 2013, far outpacing the decline in the 10 years prior to 2013.

The main issue was most of the closed schools were on undesirable blocks in undesirable areas of the city. You can’t convert a school to commerce when the school is not on a major street with existing commercial space. Maybe you make it a community center, but that’s assuming the park district doesn’t already manage one nearby. The sad truth is most of these school should have been converted to SRO housing. Hmmm…all those empty schools. all those asylum seekers?? and CTU is dead silent on the entire issue

They don’t want to utilize the empty schools. As a Welcoming Sanctuary City, we’re inches from open war fare which will spread to every other Sanctuary City.

I think the CTU is eyeing those buildings as a housing option for retired teachers who will be homeless when the pension fund fails.
