But to build its field of dreams — detractors call it a “field of schemes” — Northwestern needs the Evanston City Council to sign off on a zoning change and special uses of the stadium: The school wants it to host at least 10 concerts or other major events annually. Northwestern argues these are essential to financially sustaining the new facility while generating jobs and, by its estimate, $1.3 billion in economic impact for Cook and Lake Counties by 2031.

Long past due for Northwestern to pay Evanston, and Chicago, a negotiated “payment in lieu of taxes” amount, following lead of other unversities, like Yale to New Haven Connecticut. to compensate the municipality for municipal agency services, as well as financially contribute towards unrealized real estate tax dollars of their significant land-parcel holdings. Northwestern has a had a “free ride” for far too long. Northwestern pays extraordinary salaries to its administrators, charges extraordinary tuitions, and yet fails to pay its “fair share”. For decades Evanston community activists have been whining that NU doesn’t pay their “fair share”. Fine, maybe they don’t but without Northwestern, Evanston would just be Rogers Park North and the value of their homes would be significantly less.

As for traffic congestion and noise on game day, the stadium was there long before any of the activists moved into the neighborhood. If they wanted quiet streets, they should have moved to Wilmette or Winnetka.

Evanston’s leaders are deliberately destroying what was once a very nice town. This low – barrier homeless shelter – with the requisite crime, drugs and mayhem – is right around the corner from me, close to downtown.
