Prison sentences for retail theft doubled in 2025, according to report studying policies of State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo
The report notes that Burke reversed a policy set by Kim Foxx, who during her tenure said her administration would not file felony retail theft charges unless the stolen goods were valued at more than $1,000. Illinois law sets the threshold at $300, which is what Burke has now directed prosecutors to use.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
