Shootings, Homicides in Chicago Up This Year as They Continue to Outpace Last Year’s Historic Lows – WTTW (Chicago)

According to the CPD, there were 32 homicides in April, which marks a 39 percent increase over the 23 homicides recorded in the same month last year. Through the first four months of 2026, Chicago has seen 130 homicides, CPD data shows, up from the 120 recorded during the same period in 2025. Despite the recent uptick, the 32 homicides last month were the second fewest for any April in Chicago in more than a decade, trailing only 2025’s total.

You all look for reasons that these numbers ebb and flow. Tougher law enforcement. Weaker law enforcement. No law enforcement. The reality that nobody will talk about is the demographic committing these shootings and crimes continues to get worse. They ebb and flow based on weather and which gangs are then at war with other gangs. A truce or cease fire may result in lower numbers one year, but the basic element stays the same.
