Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Matt- I’ve brought this up a while back and would like your thoughts on this. What is the underlying factor in crime rates especially in inner cities? What is the common denominator other than single parents or lack of family structure? There are many single parents outside of inner cities like the suburbs and crime over the generations is overall less than in inner cities. My best guess is LEAD. It bears further investigation. There has been a lot of reporting on this. I’m hesitant to add much more right now because I haven’t dug in on this issue yet. I can say this: I still think the primary causes of violent anti-social behavior in Chicago and other big cities are sociocultural. Compounded by lousy court systems and a poor political climate for actual crime deterrence via robust policing. The voters in Chicago/Cook County spoke when they elected an incompetent state attorney, with zero credibility and at best marginal qualifications. Let them live with their choice. Let them live in fear. Let them suffer. Too bad, so sad.

The enlightened agenda of the left doesn’t offer the promise it pretends to offer. There can be no sustained equity without sustained effort. Of course this isn’t popular with those looking for a free ride.
