Among the 17 states where population declined over the year, losses were greatest in New York (-1.58%), Illinois (-0.89%), Hawaii (-0.71%) and California (-0.66%). Losses in these states were driven by people moving away.
In its resolution for a new accountability system, the board said the new version should recognize that societal systems play a critical role in children’s lives, and “the way students interact with those systems and structures differs depending on identity and students’ life circumstances, both of which can affect how they perform in school.”
Officials with the Chicago Teachers Union argued Monday that the halting of the universal masking requirement at Chicago Public Schools last month violated their COVID-19 safety agreement by rescinding a key tenet of the plan without reopening collective bargaining. CTU also accused CPS in the complaint of not adhering to the safety deal by allegedly withholding information such as the number of KN95 masks distributed to schools; school-level data on COVID-19 tests conducted through the district’s free weekly program; and confirmation of the creation of school-based contact-tracing teams.
Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin stated, “The Governor has had three and a half years to get this agency under control – he owns this ongoing tragedy. Since the Governor has failed to take action, I call on Director Smith to resign for the good of the children in this state.”
“We don’t go out at night anymore,” River North resident Barbara Graham said.
The main cause of death was heart disease with COVID-19 at No. 2. The city also saw increased deaths from overdoses (up 44%), motor vehicle crashes (up 54%) and homicides (up 60%).
According to a survey by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools, 90% of Illinois schools are currently experiencing staffing shortages.
“And only 5% think it will subside within the next six months,” said Joe Wall, of 10,000 Small Businesses Voices for Goldman Sachs. “So, there’s not a whole lot of optimism about the near future in terms of it getting any better.”
“Office space affordability is expensive, labor costs are more, and corporate taxes are very high there, all three of those things make it a little bit harder to run a business there,” analyst Jill Gonzalez said.
“The incentive is $1,500, which puts Illinois in line with what other states have done already,” ABATE of Illinois’ Josh Witkowski said. “There’s about eleven other states that have electric motorcycle incentives out there… It also prioritizes low income applicants.”
Plentiful electricity and fiber optics, along with an enticing state tax break, have made Elk Grove Village and its northwest suburban neighbors a hub of the booming market.
In January, just days after Chicago closed the books on its deadliest year in a quarter-century, Lightfoot declared 2022 a “make-or-break year” for doing just that. This weekend, however, proved to be the year’s first major stumbling block.
Illinois is not considering lifting its mandate for hospitals and other health care settings “at the moment,” said spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh. “We would mandate it anyway,” said Dr. Richard Freeman, regional chief clinical officer for Loyola Medicine. “Anybody in the hospital, all our personnel are still masked, visitors still have to be masked. That is not going to change in the foreseeable future.”
The group’s flyer said it hopes to address these crimes by partnering with private security firm P4 to deploy one officer in a marked vehicle to patrol their streets for eight hours a day, every day of the year, according to the flyer. P4 Security already patrols another area of Lincoln Park, and the firm was hired in December to patrol a section of Bucktown.
“Everyone knows that one of the biggest issues is inflation. One of those areas that hits the hardest is at the gas pump. There’s no question it’s an election gimmick,” said Sen. Steve McClure.
That is an indication that the mayor has failed to convince a majority of the City Council that her plan to give the city the power to seize the assets of gangs and adult gang leaders is a necessary tool at a time when homicides, carjackings and other violent crimes remain at nearly record high levels.
This bill is a part of larger reform for the agency that many representatives are hoping for. Sen. Doris Turner said she wants to take a legislative and administrative approach to reform the agency. Partially, this means adding more laws protecting and supporting the agency, she said, but it also includes reforming the way the agency operates.
The economic tracker from Harvard University shows that as of January this year, total small business revenue decreased by nearly 5% compared to 2020 in Illinois with more than 10% fewer small businesses across all sectors in that same timeframe.

Five thousand low-income Chicagoans will receive $500 in monthly installments for one year — via bank transfer or debit card — to use however they see fit. The pilot will be administered by GiveDirectly, an international nonprofit with expertise in cash assistance programs.
It’s not surprising that Illinois has retaken the top spot for nation’s highest effective property taxes. According to ATTOM, a leading curator of real estate data nationwide for land and property data, Illinois’ effective tax rate was 1.86% in 2021, followed by New Jersey at 1.73%.
The victims range in age from 16 to 65.
Four counties in Illinois — DuPage Country and three others in central Illinois —are considered medium risk.
“We talk about equity, then deliver equity,” Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez said of CPS’ expected enrollment-based cuts.
