Chicago leaders move to tighten enforcement of Welcoming City Ordinance after Minneapolis killing – FOX32 (Chicago)

Chicago aldermen advanced a proposal to give the Civilian Office of Police Accountability authority to investigate violations of the Welcoming City Ordinance. Mayor Brandon Johnson said, “My team is working overtime to locate measures that I could use through my executive authority to not just hold people accountable, but to ensure there is a mechanism in which that can take place. So we’ll continue to explore all options and take a deep look into what we can do to not just investigate, but to prosecute.”

Lawmakers allowed Illinois’ Invest in Kids scholarship tax credit program to expire Dec. 31, 2023. Pastors at St. Stanislaus Kostka and St. Jerome said government scholarships taken from Catholic schools were a factor in their schools’ pending closures. And St. Matthews in Glendale Heights closed in 2024, with Diocese of Joliet Bishop Ronald Hicks citing “a large annual deficit and substantial loss of funds due to the sunset of the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship.”

Pat Quinn promised last November that a millionaire’s tax would bring property tax relief for families and businesses, but House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 21 would split the revenue; Half would go for property tax relief, and the other half would go to school districts on a per-pupil basis. The Chicago Teachers Union and Illinois Federation of Teachers have pushed for state-level “Tax the Rich” policies.
