The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously earlier this month to add an advisory referendum to the county’s Nov. 3 general election ballot gauging support for a statewide millionaire tax.
By June, the number of SNAP recipients had fallen to nearly 1.6 million, down from nearly 1.9 million last year, according to the Illinois Department of Human Services. That’s the lowest number receiving food assistance in the state since 2009.
Chicago Police Supt. Fred Waller, 64, has now twice served as CPD’s interim leader, first leading the department from May 2023 to September 2023 before Mayor Brandon Johnson picked Larry Snelling as the city’s top cop. After Snelling took office, Waller stayed on to advise Snelling, serving as deputy director in the superintendent’s office, records show.
“The pattern is unmistakable. For 60 years, Illinois has been extraordinary at producing the people and inventions that have built the modern technology economy, but we’ve been considerably less good at keeping them. The browser and online payments went to Mountain View. Electric cars went to Palo Alto, California. Cloud infrastructure went to San Francisco. Each time, the value was created here and captured somewhere else.”
Tollway revenues are already at record highs, with $1.3 billion more in revenues in 2025 than operating and maintenance expenses. Since 1973 — the year the system was supposed to become free to drivers — the agency has collected more in tolls each year than it needed to operate and maintain the system.
The ages of the victims range from 5 to 61, according to Chicago police.
At the June 2025 House Oversight hearing on sanctuary states, Rep. Byron Donalds pressed Governor Pritzker on whether Illinois keeps track of the public dollars going to illegal immigrants. Pritzker’s reply, on Medicaid, was: “They do not get Medicaid in Illinois or any state, as far as I know.” That statement was false when he said it — false in a way that depends entirely on nobody in that room, and nobody in the press afterward, thinking through and calling out how the system he runs actually works.
The victims ranged in age from 33 to 46.
The scene was chaotic as teenagers were seen walking back and forth near the ‘L’ stop while very loud police sirens were heard. At one point, a line of police cars was seen heading into the area. Almost a dozen officers were seen surrounding some teens before they were taken into custody.
