While the Joliet region has gained from Cook County’s losses, the counties south of the city have lost population since 2010. Iroquois County, down 9%. Livingston County, down 8%. Ford County, down 8%. These areas are losing the competition for people, jobs and investment.
Ted Dabrowski was on WJOL’s Slocum in the Morning talking about how Illinois’ last legislative session failed to tackle the items hurting residents the most: COVID-19 and the economy. Instead, politicians passed a slew of bills that will increase the cost of government.
Their lack of action on what matter is a just another example of why Illinois is losing people at such a rapid pace.

People are going to realize what was lost by voting in Biden and Democrats.
Tough days ahead for America.
My observations have shown that democratic voters are unable to even listen to or consider opposing ideas and policy issues, and usually don’t even consider the policies promoted by their own team. They are happy and complacent to know that their team is in control. We are completely surrounded by D’s in Chicago, it is hopeless, they simply do not know how, or care to debate ideas and laws. i grew up in Chi-town and was taught to vote D from childhood…until waking up to reality over the past 12 years. The voters might mean well, but have been brainwashed… Read more »
Analysis of BLS household expenditures indicates that collar county debt cannot be “inflated away”. Share of annual income spent on property taxes by Midwest households is 3.7%. In Woodstock IL, a home assessed at $150,000 must pay $6000 property taxes (4%). That represents about 10% of household income. TIF has rendered impossible any new development, for at least 20 years, which would contribute property tax dollars to taxing bodies. General CPI inflation will render it (even more) impossible to live in Woodstock and towns like it, because there simply aren’t enough dollars in a household budget to pay for both… Read more »
I am surprised in my liberal town of Utopia on how do few people even know what a TIF is and the few that do say the TIFs in our town are good vs the ones in other towns are bad. As a general statement painting with a wide brush does anyone have any sense any more?
Counties under Ptell (Property tax extension limitation law) (39 in Illinois) are to me the largest driving force of high property taxes. Many people still do not know that when anyone gets an abatement/or property tax deduction as in winning an assessment challenge or homeowners/senior deduction or if property values decrease overall that the tax rate increases to compensate and taxes will never be less than the previous year. Now add in all the Tif’s as you mention plus most all taxing bodies continually increase their yearly levies and every new contract is larger than the year before plus Home… Read more »
IF the reckless spending causes inflation, they will inflate the cost and value of everything. Then all you need to do is TAX everything and the books sort of balance. What could go wrong?
