Under Gov. Pritzker, number of slain Illinois police jumps to 6th-highest nationally – Wirepoints

By: Matt Rosenberg and Ted Dabrowski

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has emboldened criminals in the state of Illinois since his election in 2019. He signed into law a controversial 2021 criminal justice “reform” bill that abolishes cash bail in 2023 – a provision opposed by 100 of Illinois’ 102 state’s attorneys. During the 2020 riots which made Chicago a national spectacle and left stores, streets and even police cars in ruin, he sent in the state’s National Guard only after the damage and only for perimeter observation of downtown. He has shown no interest in closing the deadly revolving door in Cook County criminal courts which demonstrates to offenders that consequences for grievous crimes are scant. His state Prisoner Review Board also released early from their prison terms two different convicted cop killers and another killer who had also shot and wounded a Chicago cop.

So it’s no surprise that since Gov. Pritzker assumed office in 2019, he has presided over the state’s ascent from the 18th-highest to the top six nationally in felonious killings of law enforcement officers. Eight Illinois police have been feloniously slain since 2019. From 2012 through 2018, Illinois was the 18th-worst state with six felonious killings of law enforcement officers over the period, according to FBI data.

The eight slayings that have occurred during Pritzker’s three years in office are a jump not shared by some of the nation’s other big states. In the same three years, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania each had just one or zero cop slayings.

Illinois also stands out – and not in a good way – compared to its neighbors. Illinois’ eight cops slain from 2019 through 2021 were double the four officers killed in both Michigan and Missouri. Indiana and Wisconsin each counted two officers slain in the last three full years, and just one cop in both Iowa and Kentucky.

No support

The delegitimization of police is a worrisome part of the Great Unraveling afflicting our nation, our state, Chicago’s suburbs, and the city itself. It echoes loudly in places like Chicago City Hall and Chicago Public Schools. The war on police may begin with misguided words and legislation but it helps to fuel intentional violence against law enforcement.

As the environment for law and order has deteriorated badly in Illinois, Gov. Pritzker has failed to call out Cook County Chief Judge Timothy Evans and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, who preside over an opaque, overly lenient, and deadly criminal courts system. He has also failed to sufficiently influence Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, whose hair-trigger temper further poisons the well in a city bedeviled by deadly anger management problems. Rather than pushing for serious course corrections, Pritzker has funneled state money to nonprofits for “violence prevention” programs while enabling the ruling cabal presiding over Chicago’s slide into violent decay to sidestep accountability.

Nationally, 2021 was by far the worst year of all measured since 2012 with 73 law enforcement officers feloniously slain. That was 52 percent higher than the annual average of 48 feloniously killed between 2012 and 2020. Illinois in 2021 was tied nationally among all U.S. states and territories for fourth most police feloniously killed. Only Texas, Florida, and Georgia had more. None of Illinois’ neighboring states had more than one in 2021. Among Illinois officers feloniously killed last year were Marlene Rittmanic of Bradley Police, Champaign officer Chris Oberheim, and Chicago’s Ella French

The underlying narrative fueling much of the animosity toward law enforcement officers nationwide has been that cops are out to kill blacks. The argument is advanced by strident activists and endorsed even by institutions such as Chicago Public Schools. But 94 percent of fatal police shootings of all races in 2020 involved offenders who were armed and disobeying orders to drop their weapons.

In big cities like Chicago, the real threat to the lives of blacks is other black people. As Wirepoints recently reported, “four of every five murder victims in Chicago have been black, and more than 70 percent of known Chicago murder perpetrators have also been black. That’s according to victim data by race in 2017-2020 annual police reports, and the 1991-2011 CPD report “Chicago Murder Analysis.”

Police can and do make mistakes – we detail some of Chicago’s here – and must be held accountable. But their vital work to protect public safety cannot be further compromised by continued felonious actions against them. Illinois needs to do dramatically better by setting a tone that police are valued, that they are to be respected, and that in fact, crime does not pay.

Sadly, violent attacks and violent street actions against Chicago cops have continued in 2022 and the problem in Illinois is hardly limited to Chicago. A motorist violently attacked a state trooper in Mclean County this July and an armed citizen intervened on the officer’s behalf. Another motorist in June suddenly decided to join a routine traffic stop and came rushing at a Naperville cop with an axe before being shot to death. Without state leadership that will ensure police have the political backing and legal protection they need to do their jobs, Illinois is sharply at risk of suffering further felonious killings of law enforcement officers.

It’s truly unfortunate to see how police officers continue to be marginalized by the political ruling class in Chicago, Cook County & Illinois. As a physician who has devoted his life to serving the underserved, I have spent many years of my career treating prisoners at the Cook County Correctional Institute (CCCI) & Metro Correctional Center (MCC). While I have been a staunch advocate of prison and sentencing reform, never I my life could I haven imagined that it would mean putting the lives of civilians and law enforcement officers at increased risk like is happening now. This is driven from the top elected officials. The moral in the CPD must be at an all-time new low. How many police officers in 2021& 2022 have taken their own lives? Too many! Folks, unless you stop voting in progressive liberal politicians that support no cash bail, selective prosecutions, our law enforcement agencies, quality of life and our communities will continue to spiral downward.

It is increasingly clear that those who have been elected to represent citizens instead see criminals as their constituents. It is unconscionable that criminals with multiple arrests for violent crimes are released back into communities to continue their activities. The indifference toward public safety is striking. High crime invites more criminals – more people will flee for safer states and cities, the tax base will shrink, and we will have more devastation. One would almost think this is being done on purpose…

I use to have a poly-sci teacher that always said “So goes Illinois, so goes the country”. He was speaking of presidential elections. Now we can apply that adage to the hell hole this country is becoming. With the new laws coming 1.1.23, be prepared for a crime wave like we’ve never seen before, led by the morally bankrupt politicians of Illinois. Could there be a worse governor than JB?

100 of 102 States Attorneys in Illinois were against cash bail??? How does Pritzker justify this? The government is supposed to represent us, not the other way around. This is outrageous and people are paying the price for this with their lives, literally.

With each passing article, the evidence presented and the attendant glaring results are stultifying …. and defy sentient thought and/or explanation. Matt Rosenberg and Ted Dabrowski continue to provide clinically dispassionate data that the leadership of the city of Chicago and in a larger context, the leadership of the state of Illinois either ignore or are hostilely indifferent to their findings. Ironically, with lawyers representing both local and state governments, evidence is a quaint notion but now part of the what the legal profession is based upon. Our justice system is based on an “adversarial” system. Plaintiffs and defendants vie… Read more »

Great work. Very disappointing to see my former state of Illinois foster such a dangerous environment for productive policing with such a high rate of police fatalities. Also troubling to see that my state of Georgia has an even worse rate of fatalities in making top-3 of the list. The violent riots of 2020 ignited over the hyper-politicization of the deaths of George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks was a tipping point for the anti-police, deconstruct law enforcement environment that continues to plague local politics in Atlanta and other major cities. Sad to see this transpire.

The problem staring Illinois and other Democrat run states are the goal to cause destruction, injustice, general chaos, and depopulation all embraced by the oligarchs who believe average people need to be extinguished especially the middle class who together have the most money. Everything good and wholesome like virtues of integrity and hard work is hated by people of the Pritzker family, Soros family, and ilk. Remember they want the whole world for themselves and humans like the average joes in the world might are simply collateral damage.

Before transferring to Western Illinois University, i attended College of DuPage in the 1976-77 as a Criminal Justice major. I took a Sociology class taught by a left leaning instructor. He talked about civil disturbances and brought up the high number of Chicago Police Officers killed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The instructor didn’t blame police officers for these deaths; he blamed politicians. Politicians create social and economic conditions which cause friction. Friction eventually evolving into anger. Eventually anger boils over to violent action. Those taking violent action can’t get easy access to politicians, BUT they have easy… Read more »

There are many ways to defund the Police. One of them is to make their jobs so impossible and their existence so miserable they leave your city or retire. As Ex LEO myself I couldn’t be a Cop in any of the 6 County area . As of Jan 1 I wouldn’t be a Cop in this entire State. It’s hard to believe even Democrat voters want this for their Communities. I agree with you. If I was young and seeking a career in law enforcement, wouldn’t join any police department in Illinois. Pritzker, having been born with a three billion dollar trust fund, never faced our issues and doesn’t have a clue of the damage he’s causing. He’s merely an inept #TrustFundBaby

So. assuming there are any law enforcement people brave enough to stick with a job they love, will the rest of us law abiding citizens become prisoners of the criminals that JB Prritzker wants to free? yes. Not only that, they can just decide to take up residence on your property. How on earth do we unclog the brains of those who voted for this destruction of modern civilization? On January 1st 2023 Illinois will eliminate cash bail and restrict who can be arrested. That also means many people who are already in jail will be let out. Instead of attacking those that vote Democrat, we need to show them how liberal criminal justice laws negatively impact everyone, regardless of party affiliation. Lack of respect and support for law enforcement will negatively impact us all. We may not be able to agree on economic or social issue items, but we should all be able to agree that excusing and minimizing criminal behavior will lead to detrimental consequences for all of us. I must say, respectfully, this is a naive perspective. There are enough politicians and voters who strongly believe that our criminal justice system is systemically racist, that many behind bars have been unjustly incarcerated. Leniency – excusing and minimizing criminal behavior – is a solution to achieving social justice. Until the populace rages en masse, the crime wave will continue.

Yes, yes yes!!! Like the Taliban, the progressive starts with a faulty premise, but then proceeds logically and rationally using that faulty premise to arrive at a batshit crazy conclusion. If you truly believe the faulty premise that a racist system is THE cause of BIPOC committing crime, then they can’t be responsible for their behavior, and then obviously, leniency is the only solution. Which is insane that people can freely commit crime. When small crimes are not vigorously prosecuted it can emboldened and enable criminals to commit more serious crimes, including attacks on law-enforcement officials as we are witnessing now. When lenient DAs refuse to prosecute crimes the entire law enforcement system begins to break down. Criminals lose their fear of being prosecuted and are more willing to take chances knowing that they are only going to receive a slap on the wrist for their crimes. Law enforcement officers become frustrated knowing that they are risking their lives to arrest lawbreakers only to see the DA and judges release them before they… Read more »

I have tried my best to comprehend the relatively recent phenomenon of police murders. I assume it’s relatively recent because what I remember from 77 years of living in Illinois is the occasional law enforcement officer being wounded, God forbid killed, by an escaping fugitive. Absolutely unforgivable, but I can understand it. Had I devoted my life to crime, I’m sure I’d want to be just about anywhere other than the place where I’d just committed a caper. Well researched outline of the top-down, bottom-up strategy to destroy local law enforcement in order to justify nationalizing the police force.

Socialists and globalists work to centralize power, and use pawns who buy their lie, or who are bought to execute their own destruction.

The march of the authoritarians; attempting to leave the people defenseless, and create a situation where those people beg for their chains.

In my opinion, the continued breakdown of the system, and not just in Chicago, or Illinois, but nationwide, is part of a much larger problem where Western civilization itself is under attack. Bad actors will do their nefarious deeds whenever they wish. After all, the criminal chooses when and where to attack. If they sense there is no or little danger if they attack, they will likely do more of it. Sometime ago a police officer told me that the thing criminals fear the most is getting caught. Murder should be a capital offense. Murdering a police officer is not only a crime against a human being, it is a crime that targets society itself. The police are the vanguard of protecting our rights and freedoms. To attack them is in effect attacking us, our rights, and freedom There is no reason for a governor or a mayor to tolerate this.
