Illinois sees decline in rate of residents moving out of state, study finds – Crain’s

Illinois has for the first time in 17 years managed to stem the tide of outbound migration, with roughly the same number of residents in 2025 moving into Illinois as those moving out. That’s according to the annual Migration Patterns Study released this week by Indiana-based moving company Atlas Van Lines. The same report found that about 50% of Illinois residents would choose to leave the state if they could for tax reasons alone.

The mayor’s spokesperson Cassio Mendoza confirmed that Johnson’s team on Monday afternoon began calling aldermen to take their temperature on an amended version of his head tax proposal that would raise the monthly per-employee fee to $33 with a 500-employee minimum, an apparent attempt to blunt criticism that his plan would hurt smaller companies.

“It’s the responsibility of leaders at every level to create a safe system for all riders and workers on transit. Chicago’s local leaders have neglected that responsibility — and given Chicago’s crime rate in its transit system, this isn’t an isolated incident,” said Federal Transit Administrator Marc Molinaro. “If CTA does not take immediate action to increase its law enforcement presence, we will withhold federal funds.”
