Mayor Johnson’s tax-heavy budget built for shift to digital economy, top adviser says – Chicago Sun-Times

“We have a tax regime that was built on collecting revenues from the real world — from companies that hire a lot of people. Those people buy goods. We [levy] sales taxes, property taxes,” Jason Lee said. “We’re moving to a digital economy where it’s very difficult to figure out how to capture revenue as more and more resources shift to that economy. To provide the public services that everyone relies upon, we have to figure out how to leverage ourselves to the areas of the economy that are growing exponentially, creating historic levels of wealth.”

Mayor Brandon Johnson begins budget address by thanking generations of organizers – The Triibe

“History may not repeat itself, but it certainly does rhyme, and we’re certainly walking in the rhythm drumbeat of justice. Another Huge Union Payout Will Hasten Chicago’s Demise – City Journal

“When Illinois governor J. B. Pritzker signed legislation in August that would retroactively boost the pension payouts of some Chicago police and firefighters, he did more than just increase the city’s unfunded pension liability by another $11.1 billion. He also marked a watershed moment for the city and state, by making clear that elected officials have no intention of addressing a looming fiscal crisis. Illinois is a byword for financial mismanagement.”

Editorial: Chicago’s civic-minded business leaders are just fat cats to Mayor Brandon Johnson – Chicago Tribune/Yahoo

“This budget is so bad that one editorial won’t cover all its flaws…. At the end of the day, a signal this negative to investors and existing businesses simply will lead to more future budget shortfalls as the city’s economy falls into recession. Chicago needs to be open for business. Right now, Mayor Johnson is saying — in deeds, not words — that the city that works will make it as expensive as possible to bring workers. Rivals will be rubbing their hands.”
